“That nation which separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards, and its fighting done by fools.” – Thucydides
Listen up: if you’re depressed, your gameplan clearly sucks, so you’re going to need a new one. Don’t be stubborn, or arrogant, or dismissive; and definitely don’t be a fool. If you don’t like what you read you can always blow it off. But give yourself the option first.
It’s like they told us in the squadron when we first arrived: GET SMART.
Not ‘get smart-ER‘, which would imply we were already a little smart. No. Just hit the books and don’t talk. The life of someone you care about deeply depends on you adopting this mentality. And I’m going to hook you up here – I’ve waded through all the junk and will recommend only the best.
In this section you’ll find honest reviews of the books that really made a difference for me, and if you’re too time constrained to read the entire thing I’ll be posting a cliff notes style executive summary, just for you. You’re welcome.
- The War of Art – Steven Pressfield [for entrepreneurs, artists and transitioning warriors]
- Extreme Ownership – Jocko Willink [the unbelievable power of accepting all blame – for war, business and love]
- The Art of Worldly Wisdom – Balthasar Gracian [ancient advice that still stands proud today; those that don’t understand it are doomed to repeat it…]
* In the meantime, if you’re a veteran in need please send me a message at dogfightDave@gmail.com if you’d like a free PDF copy of my book. It’s like the one-book-to-rule-them-all, with all the best stuff inside so you don’t have to wear out your library card figuring out what books are good.
** Also helpful, daily exercise of any kind (mind/body/soul connection…park at the end of the lot and walk to gain momentum if you’re out of shape), cold showers (helps you think clearly, and has been proven to fight depression), and miso soup (sounds like an old wives tale, but man that stuff is soothing… and healthy, check it out…)
